Keeping your jewellery forever radiant

The ultimate jewellery care guide

Musson Jewellers create award winning designs of unparalleled beauty and quality. To keep your jewellery looking as good as when you first purchased it, here are a few jewellery care tips and tricks shared by our team.

Diamonds

Diamonds may be the hardest substance on earth, but they are not indestructible. A hard blow can and will cause them to chip, so avoid wearing precious jewellery during manual work and exercise. Everyday exposure to creams, skin oils, hairspray, household chemicals and other substances can cause a buildup that will dull your diamond’s brilliance and sparkle.

To keep your diamonds as sparkling as the first time you wore them, we recommend regularly bringing your jewellery in store for ultrasonic cleaning. During this process our experienced team will look over your diamonds and their settings.

Diamond cleaning at home

You will need an empty bowl, a second bowl filled with lukewarm water, a gentle cloth, a soft baby toothbrush (top secret 'tool' used by Musson's founder, Robert Musson), and a foaming jewellery cleaner or mild dish soap (no detergents).

Step 1: Place your pieces in the empty bowl. Apply one-to-two pumps of cleaner for rings, or two-plus pumps for chains and necklaces. Let this soak for 20 seconds.

Step 2: Brush around the inside of the ring and very gently clean the back of an open setting. For medium to heavy chains, start by scrubbing the closure and then drag the chain through the bristles. For delicate chains, lay in your hand and gently brush or use your fingers to rub in the solution.

Step 3: Place soapy jewellery in the bowl of lukewarm water. Rinse twice to remove soap completely and dry off with the gentle cloth.

Metals

All jewellery is delicate and precious, it should be treated with care.

Pieces should not rub up against other metals or harsh surfaces as they will scratch and wear.

It is always advised that you should never wear your rings at the beach, as sand is silica and it will abrade the metal very quickly.

It's a good idea to store your precious pieces in individual small boxes or pouches when not being worn to help keep clean and prevent from being scratched.

A polish can breath new life into a piece of jewellery.

Pearls

With thoughtful care, pearls can remain as lustrous as when they were first purchased. As Kerry Musson, co-founder of Musson Jewellers likes to say

‘Put your pearls on last, and take them off first’.

Wait until after applying makeup, perfume and hair products to put on your pearl jewellery. Some chemicals may harm the nacre of pearls. They should never be worn in a ‘chlorinated’ swimming pool.

To clean your pearls, simply wipe them with a soft, damp cloth to remove excess oils, makeup and dirt. Store your pearl jewellery wrapped in a soft cloth to protect it from rubbing against harder gems or abrasive objects. Interestingly, pearls will not damage each other when stored together.

Strands will require restringing from time to time, depending on how often they are worn. It is advisable to seek guidance annually on restringing.
